Me as Sirius Black

Wow. I can hardly believe it’s 2005. I’m not big on New Year’s Resolutions but while debating whether or not to make any I certainly came up with quite a list of goals so I guess I’ll share…

  • Exercise More

I have been gaining a little bit in the midsection and it does not please me. I don’t know whether to blame stress or being less active or getting old but I’m not gonna take it anymore!

  • Read the remainder of the Dark Tower Series before the next Harry Potter book is released

I’m a huge fan of the Dark Tower series and can’t believe that I haven’t finished them by now. (I did start re-reading the series when the revised edition of Gunslinger came out…)

  • Get Braces

I’ve had dental issues since I was a wee-un. This will be the year that is remedied.

  • Get an Insulin Pump

I’ve been "managing" my diabetes via insulin injections since I was diagnosed with Type 1 about eight years ago. Pumps today are practically an artificial pancreas. I just have to wear it on my belt. And change its batteries.

That’s five tests. However, it’s all stuff I should really already know. Unfortunately, I’m the kind of person who feels the need to way over study.

  • Be ready to move on 01-01-06

Raven & I have been considering relocating for some time. Unfortunately, there have been obstacles. The academic hurdle has been overcome. That leaves the financial and the general state of repairs of our condo. We may not be ready to pack our bags next January, but at the very least, I want to be able to.

  • Reach 200 Posts by 01-01-06

Coincidentally, this is my 100th post. That doesn’t sound bad, except that I’ve been "blogging" for over 2 years! My goal is not to post every day, but to have more of a Monday, Wednesday, Friday schedule. That still puts me at an ideal of ~150 posts a year.

So I guess I’ve got some work to do…

And then?

December 25, 2004

Take that in any form you’d like. You could be a DJ, you could paint, you could write, you could even code. Still, you hold whatever you do as Art. You are passionate, and you can also try too hard.

What kind of goth are you?

It is done. I have turned in all my work. I do not have to go back on Monday. I am free. Granted, that’s just my academic life, but a burden has been lifted.

Now, this holiday season has been quite a weird one. I’ve been largely pre-occupied with my studies so Christmas itself kinda snuck up on me. This is also the first year in over 20 that I haven’t gone out of town for Christmas. Usually the whole family goes up north. After I tricked Raven into our marriage, we’ve alternated locales between up north and the Michigan family. Even though we were abandoned by my family this year, it was in fact Michigan’s turn. Unfortunately, the scheduling gods were not kind to Raven, and we are unable to make our trek.

So, here we are. We stopped over at some relatives on my father’s side of the family whom we don’t usually get to see last night. Today, we basically decided to lounge about, open our presents, and watch DVDs. I’m particularly fond of Nightmare Before Christmas Jacket that Raven got me, the copy of The Dark Knight Strikes Again from the ‘rents, and my new U2 CD from my Aunt & cousins. The gifts that I am proudest of are the Marilyn Manson T-Shirt for Raven and the Nostromo for Kaiser.

As the year winds down, we’re looking forward to the New Year’s shindig thrown by NQTYD & No Name Slob. Beyond that, I think I’m just gonna take it easy for a while.

I think I still remember how.

…almost there…

December 16, 2004

You are .mpg You live life like it was a movie. Constantly in motion, you bring pleasure to many, but are often hidden away.
Which File Extension are You?

OK. I think I’m a little less stressed than the last time I posted. I still have a boat loat of work to do for school, but I actually think I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

There hasn’t really been time for much else besides my studies… I did get to go see Blade Trinity on Wednesday. It was a kinda weird work thing. Free Lunch and a Movie. It was a little weird to see a movie at 12:30 and then be free for the afternoon. Of course, I had some homework and a Financial Aid Exit Interview to attend to, so the enjoyment of said free time was slight.

And yeah, school is expensive. They had a summary of every loan I’ve take out for Brown, including my PC-LAN Certificate loans from 1996!

So yeah, my brain is about $55,776 in the hole.

Humour

I’m not sure why I’ve got Star Wars on the brain lately, but at least I’m not the only one!

The funny thing is, I saw the shirt in my Think Geek Newsletter and thought it was hilarious, but I did not realize it comes from the same brain that PvP comes from! BTW Scott, (in case he checks his referrer logs) I realize that I know very little about webcomics, but I do know that every other one I read manages to get their comics up by NOON! <wink>

Sorry so quiet around these parts of late. I’m a little dazed regarding my remaining days of higher education. I have a lot of work to finish up in that rapidly diminishing timeframe.

Of course, staying up late and working on finding a decent photo of myself to use as a headshot doesn’t really help matters. And, then I had to scan it. Then, I had to crop it. THEN,I had to remove Raven from the picture. Oy. I think I did an OK job of it however. How does this look?

Geoffrey Hofman-Frethem Headshot

Hopefully this audition will be more fruitful than the last one. Wow. It’s been awhile. Amazing the crimp an 18-month academic program can put in your style.

The show wouldn’t even open until May, so at least I’d still get a little down time. I dunno, there’s a part of me that already is trying to plot what I should do to make use of my upcoming free time in the evenings. More school or studying for a Network+ or a CCNA? A new part-time job to help make ends meet? Start trying to make money on ebay?

Actually, I think I should get started on my new career as a lottery winner….

Letting Off Steam

November 22, 2004

So, I was about 5 blocks away from my house tonight and the power goes out. I don’t know what the heck Xcel is doing but the traffic lights are even totally dead. It’s kinda eerie considering it’s overcast and there’s no moon to speak of this evening. So, I finish going to FedEx to pick up the mystery package. (It turns out to be Alienware swag to give away at the LAN party I didn’t go to last weekend… hmm… I guess they weren’t kidding when they said they needed more notice….)
I ran back to the house because my notebook was on AC and would keep humming along contendedly until the battery died and that’s usually not the best scenario for a PC. SO I return home, find the candles that we used when our power went out about a week ago, (seriously, WTF mate?) and lift the lid on my notebook to discover a BSOD waiting for me.
So I reboot to make sure that if it’s fried at least I know what I’m up against. Fortunately all seems well. Since Raven should be home any minute I thought I’d wait for her and do a candle hand off so as not to require her fumbling about for 5-10 minutes when she gets home.
Seeing as my battery has 71% remaining and I have a little time to kill, I figure I’ll see how City 17 is doing. Alas, Steam seems determined to not let me find out! When I launch Steam it tries to connect, and then tells me it cannot, and asks would I like to Retry connection or Start in Offline mode. Seeing as neither the wireless router nor the cable modem have any power, I dont’ think I’ll be able to connect right now, so i hit Offline mode.
steamerror1.png
It really should be that simple right?
Well, it ain’t. Then I get this error message.
steamerror2.png
Now, I’ve worked Tech Support before, so i know the value of a good error message. This don’t cut it.
Directing me to a web site when I most likely have problem connecting to the internet is right on par with asking me if I can email the error message I get when I try to send an email! Oy.
I guess I’ll just have to play Doom3.
